Summertime and feeling Groovy

Yes, I know that my blog has been woefully out of date, with no news for a very long time. I have been up to my eyeballs lately, and somehow I never seemed to sit down long enough to write.

New Shortbread Pan – Rose Window

(I just posted the following over on Shortbreadpan.com. Never one to waste anything I am posting it here as well. ~ Lucy) Though I had studied art history extensively and always found myself drawn to the simpler, more austere paintings and architecture, I found myself falling head over heels in love with Gothic cathedrals the first time I went to France when I was 20. That was a very long time ago, but those buildings and the incredible light that danced through the brilliant Rose Windows high up in the grey walls have stayed with me. Fast...

A New Shortbread For Cookie Stamps Is Born!

A friend of mine from Beijing was all excited this year because her aging parents were coming to visit her from China for the Chinese New Year. She hadn’t seen them for ages, and she was putting together a big celebration. Since I had started making Brown Bag Cookie Molds in 1983 because I had fallen in love with carp shaped cookies I had seen in a shop window in Boston’s China Town around the New Year, I decided to make almond “Good Luck Fish” from my very first mold. Fall Is Upon Us

When my sons were in school, I grudgingly considered Labor Day to be the start of autumn. The trees hadn’t started to turn, there hadn’t been a frost to kill the tomatoes, beans and basil, but the daily rhythm of life changed. The family had to get up, dressed, fed and organized by a specific time. Lunches had to be packed (“But I don’t FEEL like a tuna sandwich!”) Now I mark the beginning of autumn not with a specific holiday but with the sound of the geese as they head south. The actual date varies considerably. Usually this...

Summer not so easy…

I believe in passions. If nothing else, they provide my life with great organizing principles. Brown Bag Cookie Molds, Shortbread Pans, and Cookie Stamps have all sprung from my two core passions for sculpture and baking. I have indulged both since I was too young to go to school. My mother had an awful time keeping me out of the kitchen, and having an adored and adoring uncle who was a painter, I was never short on supplies for drawing or playing with clay. I am fortunate that my work is what I love to do anyway. However, I have to...
